The Nashville suburb library has been discharging raw sewage into storm drain pipes for nearly ten years due to a construction error

Restroom pipes in the John P. Holt Brentwood Library of Brentwood, Tenn., have been dumping sewage into a storm drain that empties into the Little Harpeth River since 2009. A recent inspection found that two sinks and two toilets were incorrectly installed and connected to the storm drain system, instead of the city’s sewage system. Since the discovery April 27, the restrooms have been closed and the library is working to connect the pipes to the proper system.

American Constructors was the contractor of the project and CHC Mechanical Contractors was the subcontractor who originally installed the system in 2009, according to The Tennessean. The two contractors, along with a new contractor hired by the city and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation are working together to reconnect the pipes appropriately.

The storm drain where the sewage was discharging emptied into a ditch behind the library that connects to the Little Harpeth River, but officials are unsure if waste ever made it to the river. According to News Channel 5, the city tested the creek and found no sewage in it, but there may still be traces of wastewater along the creek bed.
